Fantasio is a disenchanted, debt-ridden petit-bourgeois who dwells on his boredom by partying and drinking with his friends. Ready to do anything to escape his creditors, he arranges to take the place of the recently deceased court jester of Bavaria. Princess Elisabeth sacrifices herself by agreeing to an arranged marriage with the Prince of Mantua, whom she does not know, for the love of her father and to avoid war. But a meeting with Fantasio changes all that.
